Trump Officials DEMANDING Papers for Domestic Travel: “Have Your Papers Ready.”
A new warming for domestic travelers, courtesy of Trump Administration and his growing authoritarian state. Customs agents recently checked the identification of all passengers leaving a domestic Delta flight.
How many of us heard “let me see your papers” while watching a World War II movie? Gestapo agents would approach an innocent person who they thought were suspicious and would ask to see their papers.
And after viewing the papers, the Gestapo agents would take the person into a waiting black car and disappear. And how often did we say that “this will never happen here.”

These are customs agents forcibly checking the ID of every passenger deplaning from Delta flight 1583 tonight at JFK. A domestic flight.
Well, it happened. Customs agents asked passengers deplaning a domestic Delta flight at JFK Airport in New York for their photo identifications. Passenger Britton Taylor tweeted pictures of the event.
Another passenger, Matt O’Rourke, was one of the passengers that customs agents asked for a photo ID. He told the Gothamist the following: “When we were getting out there were two customs agents. I don’t think they had a clipboard or a list. I think they were just looking at everybody’s ID.”
“They did it really carefully,” O’Rourke continued. “You could tell they weren’t just looking for a name. They read my entire ID and looked at me the entire time. I was probably the tenth person off the plane, and they did the same for everyone in front of me.”
O’Rourke also heard the flight attendant tell passengers three or four times to “please have your papers ready.” I wonder if there were flashbacks of the Gestapo agents among the passengers?
The flight attendant changed from asking for papers to asking for a photo ID. O’Rourke was surprised.
O’Rourke said that he “flew almost 200,000 miles last year.” He also admitted: “I’ve never had my ID checked getting off a domestic flight.”
While still worrisome, we could probably understand such actions by customs agents on an international flight. But on a domestic flight?

My flight from SFO to JFK. We were told we couldn't disembark without showing our "documents."
Customs and Border Patrol Agents told the Gothamist that ICE agents needed their assistance to execute a removal order. But passenger O’Rourke said that they did not have a clipboard or anything to show names.
Could this be a fluke? Possibly a few agents flexing their authority? Or did they receive orders to check the IDs of the passengers onboard?
Surely someone will investigate why these agents checked IDs. The passengers and the public deserve an explanation.
This authoritarian action is what we can expect in the world of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon. Their Muslim immigration ban will grow to their having to check the IDs of everyone on international flights and, later domestic flights.
These are the actions of an authoritarian regime, folks. If things continue as they are, we will need to carry identification cards everywhere we go because there are terrorists lurking behind every corner.
And we can expect no help from Congress. With a Republican majority in both the House and Senate and every Republican afraid of Trump’s tweets, they will let every one of his and Bannon’s criminal actions slide.
We cannot allow this to happen. We must demand that our elected representatives investigate this intrusion on privacy and let us know why it happened. We have a right to know.
