Feb. 25-I knew it would be a transition day. The wind kicked up in the early afternoon, then intensified. Chilly tomorrow morning, probably wind. It's so close to March it might as well be March.

The morning paper carried the first report about the peach crop in South Carolina. The orchard owners haven't seen it this warm. The blossoms have formed. They can stand a low to 32, but the 20s will doom most of them.

A good portion of the morning was spent on the bus to Wal Mart for cat food and a small bag of organic fertilizer which should hold me for another couple days. All I did was put in 12 more lettuce seedlings, and a row of Paris Market carrot. The dry weather means I must water twice a day, first when I arrive, and when I head for home.

The gang at the Starbucks are getting used to me. They even have a bag of grinds ready for me so I don't have to wait.

While piddling I happened to notice asparagus spears in the corner where the crew had torn up the bed. Apparently some actually survived. There they were. Five of them poking up from the ground up asphalt next to the patio. This variety, Precoce D'Argenteuil, is so tender one can eat them raw. I've got to find a place where I can grow them from seed.

He looks at you like you owe him money.
