Feb. 23-The weather Friday will peak out about 20 degrees above seasonal. High 70s. Then it will cool down. But not really cold. Then back above seasonal again. What's troubling, though, is the lack of rainfall. Zone 7b is above average so far in 2017, but it's misleading. Most of the rain happened in a short period in January. It's really been quite since.

Fortunately, the property has city water. Maybe I will have the energy to dig up the break in the line on Friday. I didn't have it in me today to dig any soil, except with a garden trowel.

I'm up to 72 lettuce plants. In between each row are cool season veggies. Last night I poked around in the drawer where I store seeds and came across a partial packet of Burpee's Golden Beets I bought last year from Seed Savers Exchange. Then I discovered a packet of Gladiator hybrid parsnip I bought in 2016 from Territorial Seed. And a freebie packet of heirloom Phlox seed that came with an order for nasturtiums, which didn't do squat. I will go back to an heirloom nasturtium called Empress of India this season.

The girls at the glass shop like the Green Globe artichoke seeds. Leigh Ann showed a packet of what she believed were Mexican Sour Gherkin seeds. They looked for all the world like watermelon seeds. I told Leigh Ann that the fruit is no bigger than the end of your thumb. How could something that small contain a seed this large? The saga will continue.

The beet seed, the parsnips were planted, along with a variety of carrot I discovered in a can from the shed. I bought them from Johnny's of Maine last season. They call them Atlas, but I know them as Paris Market. Unlike the typical tapered root, these carrots are round, about the size of a golf ball, and do well in heavy clay soils.

Maybe I will have more energy Friday. I'll be in a t-shirt by 10.
