I'd guess the other group must be closely entwined with him, so the issue of control doesn't concern him, but you'd have to ask him to know for sure.

As to why retire his own rather than buy on open market, it's cheaper to retire his own shares than to buy shares on the open market, and he probably still expects to make a lot of money off the 500 million shares he has.

I don't have an exact quote but he expressed understanding for shareholders' concerns with the high OS, and said it was intended as a gesture of goodwill to build trust.
