Feb. 21-Two more Rosa Bianca eggplant seeds germinated, so I moved the biodegradable grow sponges to red plastic cups filled with potting soil and placed them on the window sill to receive more direct sunlight. That's four plants in 7 days of 55 cells. Hopefully the rest will take their time germinating.

At the bus stop on N. Tryon, just up from Woodies, I saw Clayton Steele across the street. He crossed over to talk. He does all the talking because he can't hear too well. That man must be over 70 now. He could take the bus, but he walks -- everywhere. I figure he must put enough miles in a year to reach at San Bernadino.

I piddled and moped today. Didn't fell much like tilling, so I didn't. Didn't feel much like digging soil, so I didn't. At least 6 more lettuce plants and a row of spinach went into the raised bed. I nailed up another 20 inch box. I now have 10 stacks completed next to the slope. It's slow, but it's progress.

I brought three 16 oz. cups of soil for the girls at the glass shop. When the artichoke seeds arrive I'll bring them. Leigh Ann showed me a picture of a veggie I've grown: Mexican Sour Gherkins, also known as Mouse Melons. She'll have fun with them.

I left around 4 for the bus stop. Too many derelicts waiting for the dope man to suit my taste so I continued up N. Tryon to the next stop and got out 8th. I spotted Jerry, who had to close down his stand at the 7th Street Public Market. He asked what I had growing. I learned he still wants to buy produce, only this time he wants larger quantities for two customers, one of which is the head chef at the Marriott uptown.

I just sold everything I will grow.

He looks at you like you owe him money.
