Hemp industry focus of Charleston meeting

FEB 20, 2017

CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Hemp Industries Association is partnering with the West Virginia Farmers Cooperative Inc. today to discuss America’s history with industrial hemp, said J. Morgan Leach of Vienna, CEO of the state farmers cooperative and executive director of the state hemp industries association.

“Many of our Founding Fathers were hemp farmers and businessmen who recognized the advantages of this crop for agriculture and for industry. In 1794, George Washington wrote a letter to his gardener at Mount Vernon stating, ‘make the most of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere.’ That’s exactly what West Virginia farmers intend to do,” according to Leach.

“We’ve got a big job to do. Diversifying the economy in West Virginia is hard work. We are dedicated to farming new supply chains of innovative crops to stimulate entrepreneurism in our state’s agricultural and industrial sectors. We need new jobs and new industry. With the proper support, industrial hemp will provide both,” Leach said.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held today from 2-5 p.m. at Starlings Coffee,1599-A Washington St. East in Charleston. RSVPs can be sent to morgan@wvhia.org.
