Can a gamer (or an advanced workstation user) go with reduced DRAM with this Optane caching - than they would without Optane caching?

No way! Optane is a slowpoke compared to DRAM.

Intel wants Optane DIMMS to replace DRAM in certain datacenter workloads, ones where you want very large amounts of memory (i.e. in memory database). 3DXP should allow for more memory per system than DRAM, and the cost should be lower too.

But it is just one slice of the overall server market that Intel can go after with Optane, not the whole market (since, again, Optane is much slower than DRAM).
