One good thing about your conversation is the kid gave a you a true answer instead of making excuse.

From the time my kids could understand words I pounded home work ethic.
That you work hard give it your all no matter your occupation.

Show up EARLY to work.
Doesn't mean you start work but be seen you beat the slackers there and never be late.

Taught them that most, not all, but most people who own a business worked their butts off to be in that position.

When you go home at night they are still putting out fires due to crappy employees don't you be one of them.

Both my kids whom sometimes can tick me off in other area's the good news is they know how to work and get there on time.
