Feb. 17-It took all of 15 minutes to till up 360 sq ft of raised bed with a Bolens 6.5 hp roto tiller. I am grateful to the folks at the glass and door shop. The owner actually spent close to $150 for repairs to get it running. It started on the first pull after sitting up for a couple months.

After tilling, I took the hoe and pulled in soil from the timbers on both sides, then raked it smooth. I placed two six foot 2x12 boards to sit on while transplanting the first tray of lettuce plants. I sprinkled a little Plant Tone 4-3-3 organic granular fertilizer into the soil and worked it by hand, same as cook prepares a dough. Sometimes one's hands make the best tools. I took 5 foot length of half inch aluminum pipe to make a depression in the soil beside the first row of lettuce seedlings and plant Danvers Half Long carrot seed from a packet I bought from Dollar General. (Seed racks are a temptation) I covered those seeds with some potting soil, then moved the boards another few inches transplanted more lettuce seedlings. Then I planted a row of America spinach seed before transplanting the third row of 6 lettuce seedlings. It was time to water.

Unfortunately, after turning on the main valve I discovered a leak at the spigot in the corner. I shut off the main valve and told the project manager. He'll get the busted PVC pipe repaired.I still have other spigots, so I won't lack for water.

The week ahead calls for some near record highs for final third of February. The soil will warm quickly. Maybe too quickly. Still, I will continue.

Saturday I will till the soil next to the ledge for legumes. I discovered a nearly full one pound bag of Windsor Fava Bean seed in the drawer. I need to some bone meal for phosphor. Wood ashes for potassium I've already taken care of. I better remember to bring the packet of Pink Beauty radishes when I head out tomorrow morning.
