Indianapolis-based Global Water Technologies has announced that its proposal submitted with the city is one of the five winners in the White House Commitment: Smart Cities Council Challenge Grants.

Erik Hromadka, CEO of Global Water Technologies, said: “We have an opportunity to showcase leading solutions in the emerging smart water sector and related data-driven applications for energy and transportation.”

Indianapolis and Philadelphia were the two winning cities to select water as areas of focus.

The announcement of winning the White House grant follows recent news about AT&T selecting Indianapolis and Austin as the first two cities for its new 5G wireless network. The telecommunications company said that the network will be capable of transmitting data at peak speeds of 400 megabits per second, which is at least 20 times faster than the 4G LTE speeds common today.

As this publication reported earlier this month, San Diego, California, is pushing ahead with a ‘machine network’ dedicated to clean energy and sustainability. This ‘machine network’ is being powered by Ingenu, a company which provides IoT machine connectivity through its random phase multiple access (RPMA) technology. The network will cover the whole city, which amounts to 800 square miles and more than 2.6 million people, and builds upon San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, which enables sustainability initiatives such as water conservation and improving air quality.
