Industria 4.0, le "brilliant factory" di GE trampolino per l'Italia

The translation isn't stellar but most of the message is clear.

Industry 4.0, "brilliant factory" GE springboard for Italy

THE INTERVIEW

The president speaks and Ad, Sandro De Poli: "Virtual manufacturing, sensors and digitization of the supply chain at the center of production. In Florence the first project." Calenda floor: "It will bring the country into the future, Italy has the cards in the rules to compete with Germany"

Federica Meta

Big data, software, sensors, control systems and robotics to increase productivity and optimize the operation of machines and operations. These are the pillars of GE Italy Strategy 4.0 Industry that the Minister for Economic Development, Carlo Calenda, considers it a positive example to follow. Sandro De Poli, president and CEO of GE Italy, the outlines in Corcom.

De Poli, what is realizing in practice GE Italy?

Our strategy focuses on the so-called Brilliant Factory characterized by four elements: virtual manufacturing, automation via sensors, optimization of production and supply chain optimization. GE currently has 400 factories globally. To transform the way these factories are managed and to increase productivity, we are carrying out 13 pilot projects on "Brilliant Factory". In Italy we started with Florence. Another commitment relates to our unit GE Additive.

What is it about?

In Italy there are three factories where GE produces Additive technology. The Avio Aero facility in Cameri produces propellers for turbine aircraft engines. The result is the creation of propellers for aircraft engines of titanium aluminum, with thermodynamic performances equivalent to those of conventional materials, but with a weight reduced by half. Thanks to innovative techniques such as those of Cameri is possible to decrease the weight of each aircraft, thereby reducing the fuel consumption and emissions. The pole of GE Oil & Gas in Talamona is an innovative industrial center that makes technology research his strength, specializing in the production of blades, basic installations placed both above and around the rotating part of a turbine to drive the compressor or expansion of the gas in its interior. In 2004, the plant has become center of excellence for the production of small components throughout GE. Thanks also to the recent development dell'Additive Manufacturing the Lombard facility in GE Oil & Gas has finally made the final leap that made him a pioneer in the 3D printing applied to industry. Finally, GE Oil & Gas Additive Center of Excellence in Florence that also carries out research and development.

Italy is moving towards Industry 4.0. He believes that the country has the papers in order?

Not only do I think he has everything it takes to make it, but I am convinced even more that have no choice. Or at most within 4-5 years it is likely to disappear from the scene of the world's manufacturing.

We are late?

No, today the delta between the countries that have already digitized the production and supply chain - led by Germany - and those that are accelerating now still is not as wide. This means that there is scope to implement and implement the plan Industry 4.0.

Therefore welcomes the Calenda program?

It is a well-structured plan, with rules of engagement open to all companies that want to do smart manufacturing.
It refers to the fact that incentives are "horizontal" and not notice? Someone has criticized the decision, noting that it is likely the squandering of resources, maybe even giving money to those who really is not interested in innovation.
Frankly I criticisms seem baseless. I have never met an entrepreneur interested in tax benefits or other forms of incentive, if not intended for targeted investments. The measures of the Plan for Industry 4.0 will accelerate the modernization of Italy towards new horizons of competitiveness. The commitment to ensure adequate network infrastructure and to guarantee security and data protection will allow our country to make the technological leap needed to improve productivity and efficiency of the manufacturing system.

A much debated issue is the involvement of SMEs in the Industry 4.0. What are the chances that these businesses, traditionally more resistant to innovation, are drivers of change?

The engagement mechanism of small and medium enterprises is never easy. In my opinion it is the central role that the associations that you have to be leader of the roll out of the plan. On the other side there is also an advisory role on the part of universities, which will help to make sure that anyone who is interested to invest in this area to do it by following the track.

Like GE can contribute to the "digital" revival of SMEs?

The Brilliant Factory are also "space" where to show to small and medium-sized enterprises What does make 4.0 industry, how to intervene to digitize the production but also the supply chain. GE is also ready to offer its support to this plan, by making Italian industry with its digital platform open Predix, the result of an unparalleled knowledge of industrial machines and more than 5 years of research and development in the field of Industrial Internet of Things, in collaboration with the world's best universities and Italian.

Another hot issue is the great transformation of the work. Her that idea has been done it will be a chance or a disaster in terms of jobs?

It is difficult to make predictions on the employment impact. It is clear that there will be enormous epochal changes. But perhaps the right approach to deal with this is to ask the question from another angle: how many jobs will be lost if Italy loses the digital train? In that case, yes, it would be legitimate to speak of a catastrophe.

So?

It serves a bold investment in skills because the new industry will increasingly need to hyper-specialized professionals able to operate in the system. Industry 4.0 4.0 are indispensable engineers, surveyors 4.0.

To make investments needed money, lots. And companies, especially small and medium-sized, often do not make it. What to do?

There are regional training funds, for example, that if used properly can be a key. But it is necessary that the information on the access circulate mode. Even in this case is the central role that associations. Then there's education.

That judgment is heard giving the school and Italian University?

I want to say that the level of preparation of students is high. And I am referring to both the university education is at the top. A positive example? The technical high schools that prepare complete figures that, in field 4.0, will be increasingly required.
