Sanders Shrugs Off Business Owner’s Concern About Obamacare

When a Texas small business owner tried to make Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., understand how Obamacare was throttling her business, Sanders made it clear her dilemma mattered little to him.

The exchange took place Tuesday evening during a CNN-televised debate about Obamacare.

During the debate, LaRonda Hunter, a Fort Worth hair salon owner, said she is unable to grow her business to be larger than 50 employees because she can’t afford to provide them with health insurance, as required under Obamacare.

“Let me give you an answer you will not be happy with,” Sanders replied. “I think that businesses that employ 50 people or more… I’m sorry, I think that in America today, everybody should have health care. And if you have more than 50 people, you know what, I’m afraid to tell you, I think you will have to provide health insurance.”

“So my question is how do I do that without raising my prices to my customers or lowing the wages to my employees?” she asked.

Sanders tried to turn aside Hunter’s concerns by joking that he was “not much of an expert on hairdressing in general.”

He told Hunter that if other businesses were providing health insurance and she was not, those businesses “are in an unfair competitive situation.”

“You can compete and maybe charge lower prices, get business, while they on the other hand might be providing decent health insurance,” Sanders said.

When Hunter said profit margins at salons are “about the same,” Sanders again said he was not an expert in Forth Worth hair salons, but stuck to his point.

“… I do believe if you have more than 50 people, you should be providing health insurance,” Sanders concluded.

However, Hunter had one person on her side — Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who called Obamacare’s mandate that employers provide health insurance the nation’s “biggest job killer.”

“There are millions of small businesses in the exact same situation you are in,” Cruz told Hunter.

Businesses like hers are being told by Democrats, “Tough luck, we don’t care if it drives you out of business,” Cruz said. “That’s taking away opportunity and it’s hurting, in particular, the most vulnerable. It’s one of the most damaging things about Obamacare.”
