Let's go back to spring of 2014, when the US/EU/IMF machine threw the duly elected Ukrainian government President, Yanukovych, under the proverbial bus.

And to the DOD, if one looks at the video, it is pretty darned hard to "unsee".

Crimean officials understood that post-overthrow, there was no legitimate government in Kiev, so they did two things.

First, they petitioned the Crimean people to determine if they wanted to stay with Ukraine, post-putsch, or petition Russia to become a part of the Russian Federation, and in an overwhelmingly positive response, the Crimean people voted to petition Russia to join the Russian Federation.

The Russian Federation accepted the petition, and Crimea became part of Russia.

"Peaceful self-determination" is enshrined in the UN Charter, an issue on which apparently our DOD is experiencing a massive SMD moment (selective memory disorder) in talking about this alleged "Russian aggression", which never, ever happened.
