In private meeting, Pence vows ‘full evaluation of voting rolls’ over claims of fraud

President Trump, accompanied by Vice President Pence, shakes hands with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, prior to speaking at the Republican congressional retreat in Philadelphia.
January 27, 2017
In a private meeting with congressional Republicans this week, Vice President Pence vowed that the Trump administration would pursue a wide-ranging probe of voting rolls in the United States to examine whether millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election as President Trump has charged.
“What I can tell you is that I would anticipate that the administration is going to initiate a full evaluation of voting rolls in the country, the overall integrity of our voting system in the wake of this past election,” Pence told Republican lawmakers during a question-and-answer session at their annual policy retreat in Philadelphia this week.
The vice president’s comments, captured in a recording obtained by The Washington Post, give the clearest indication yet of how the Trump administration intends to investigate whether 3 million to 5 million people voted illegally in the 2016 general election, an unsupported claim Trump has made.
In the recording, Pence invoked a study [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/11/29/trump-camps-repeated-use-of-dubious-sources-on-voter-fraud/ ] that Trump has falsely claimed shows widespread voter fraud.
“Just because so many Americans share the concern that you have, I have, the president certainly has about people being registered in multiple states,” Pence added. “You can anticipate that we will be looking for ways to work with you, to simply dig into it, to follow the facts, to see where the facts go. That one-person, one-vote principle is at the very heart of this republic and our democratic institutions, and it must be defended.”

Official from Le Pen’s far-right party says it’s ‘just like the Israeli government’

01/27/2017
Nicholas Bay, the secretary-general of France’s ultra-nationalist National Front party, made a low-key three-day visit [ http://jpupdates.com/2017/01/26/official-from-frances-ultra-nationalist-national-front-party-visits-israel/ ] to Israel this week, meeting with Young Likud chairman David Shayan. Bay’s visit was unusual in that the far-right party, which has been associated with anti-Semitism, is boycotted by Israel.
In an interview [ http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-1.767857?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&v=7823B79E1F296546C033788FA41C07DF / http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-1.767857 ] with Haaretz Thursday, Bay, 39, stressed that his party, headed by presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen, is not racist or anti-Semitic.
According to Bay, the Israeli government does not understand that the National Front “only wants to protect the security of French citizens, the French economy, France’s borders and French identity – just like the Israeli government, and just like the Trump administration in the U.S. We don’t want to interfere in your decisions, but we’re extending our hand to the Israeli government.”
Founded in 1972 by Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, the National Front is based on a platform of extreme opposition to immigration, economic protectionism, and a strict approach to law and order issues. Jean-Marie Le Pen was ousted from the party in 2011 due to anti-Semitic comments.
In the Haaretz interview, Bay claimed that the National Front was never anti-Semitic, and has always had Jewish members.
“There were Jews in the party already upon its establishment, but when [Jean-Marie] Le Pen began speaking as he does he found himself at a disagreement with most of the party’s voters and members,” Bay said.
A 2002 article by the Anti-Defamation League noted the elder Le Pen’s long record of anti-Semitism. The article cited Le Pen’s statement that “the races are not equal,” and accusation in 1997 that then-President Jacques Chirac was “in the pay of Jewish organizations, and particularly of the notorious B’nai B’rith.”

Prosecutor: Man attacks Muslim airline employee at JFK

FILE - In this Saturday, April 6, 2013, file photo, a Delta Airlines jet flies past the company’s billboard at Citi Field, in New York. A Massachusetts man who authorities say assaulted a Muslim airline employee at New York’s Kennedy Airport is facing hate crime charges. The Queens District Attorney’s Office says 57-year-old Robin Rhodes, of Worchester, was waiting for a flight to Massachusetts Wednesday night, Jan. 25, 2017, when he approached Delta employee Rabeeya Khan, who wears a hijab, while she was sitting in her office. Prosecutors say Rhodes cursed Islam, punched the door and kicked Khan’s leg.
(Mark Lennihan, File/Associated Press)

Jan. 27, 2017 8:31 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) — A Massachusetts man is accused of attacking a Muslim airline employee at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, allegedly kicking and shouting obscenities at the woman and telling her that President Donald Trump "will get rid of all of you," authorities said.

The Queens District Attorney's Office said Robin Rhodes, of Worcester, had arrived from Aruba and was awaiting a connecting flight to Massachusetts Wednesday night when he approached Delta employee Rabeeya Khan, who wears a hijab, while she was sitting in her office.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said Rhodes came up to the door and went on a profanity-laced tirade, asking the woman if she was praying. Rhodes then allegedly punched the door, which hit the back of Khan's chair. Khan asked Rhodes what she had done to him and Rhodes replied, "You did nothing." He then cursed at her and kicked her in the leg, Brown said.

When another person tried to calm him down, Brown said Rhodes moved away from the door and Khan ran out of the office. Rhodes followed her, got down on his knees and began to bow down in imitation of a Muslim praying, shouted obscenities and said "Trump is here now. He will get rid of all of you. You can ask Germany, Belgium and France about these kind of people. You see what happens," Brown said.

At the time of his arrest, Rhodes allegedly told police, "I guess I am going to jail for disorderly conduct. I couldn't tell if it was a man or woman because their back was to me and they had something covering their head."

Rhodes was charged with assault, unlawful imprisonment, menacing and harassment as hate crimes. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney who can comment on the charges.

"The bigotry and hatred that the defendant is accused of manifesting and acting upon have no place in a civilized society — especially in Queens County, the most culturally diverse county in the nation," Brown said. "Crimes of hate will never be tolerated here and when they do, regrettably occur, those responsible will be brought to justice."

Student promoting white nationalism on UW-Madison campus exposed as racially-motivated arsonist

Bascom Hall on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
January 27, 2017
Earlier this month, Daniel Dropik, a University of Wisconsin-Madison student, decided to found a Madison chapter of the American Freedom Party.
The American Freedom Party is a party of white nationalists that proclaims itself as primarily for “white Americans, and all Americans who support our mission,” its website states [ http://theamericanfreedomparty.us/mission-statement/ ]. Founded in January 2010, its platform [ http://american3rdposition.com/?page_id=9184 ] invokes “freedom from immigration invasion” and “freedom of association,” specifically “freedom in racial matters.”
Dropik, 33, had long been interested in political debate, and believed that the UW-Madison campus had an anti-white climate. He believed that there was room for a pro-white student group outside of the conservative and libertarian party groups that already existed on the campus. And he wanted to be the creator of an explicit white advocacy party on campus.
So Dropik created a website, MadisonAFP.org [ https://madisonafp.org/ ], a recruitment video [ https://videopress.com/v/N9BOMhag ], and set out to give out fliers to other students.
“Fight Anti-White Racism on Campus! | Join Our Student Club | MadisonAFP.org/contact | #UWAltRight,” the flier read.
[...]
... Dropik had entered a guilty plea to two racially-motivated arsons, according to documents from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit [ http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data2/circs/7th/061492p.pdf ].
In 2005 Dropik had been caught starting fires in two predominantly African American congregations, causing $850 in damage to the Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee and $39,000 in damage to the Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lansing, Mich. according to the Daily Cardinal [ http://www.dailycardinal.com/article/2017/01/leader-of-uw-madison-alt-right-movement-committed-racially-motivated-crimes-in-2005 ].
Dropik had committed the crimes because he “believed a black person had stolen his backpack … and black men beat him up during a party near the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,” according to the Associated Press [ http://bigstory.ap.org/article/610943610a2a4a6c98a44c7d81880120 ].
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Rudolph Randa sentenced Dropik to 63 months in prison, which he served, as well as three years on supervised release.
[...]
When Dropik was released, he pursued and was granted an associate degree at UW-Waukesha in 2013. He applied to UW-Madison in 2015 and is currently in his second year on campus, with a focus in computer science. He uses as his Twitter avatar “Pepe the Frog,” a symbol co-opted by white nationalist groups.

New U.S. U.N. envoy warns allies: back us or we'll take names

Jan 27, 2017
The new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, pledged on Friday to overhaul the world body and warned U.S. allies that if they do not support Washington, then she is "taking names" and will respond.
Haley made brief remarks to reporters as she arrived at the world body's headquarters in New York to present her credentials to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"Our goal with the administration is to show value at the U.N. and the way that we'll show value is to show our strength, show our voice, have the backs of our allies and make sure that our allies have our back as well," Haley said.
"For those that don't have our back, we're taking names, we will make points to respond to that accordingly," added Republican President Donald Trump's U.N. envoy.
Haley, who was South Carolina's Republican governor when Trump picked her for the post, has little foreign policy and no U.S. federal government experience.

Trump Meets Theresa May of Britain as He Weighs Lifting Russia Sanctions
JAN. 27, 2017
WASHINGTON — President Trump [ https://www.nytimes.com/topic/person/donald-trump ] was meeting on Friday with Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain in a session fraught with tension as the new American leader contemplates lifting sanctions against Russia [ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/russiaandtheformersovietunion/index.html ] despite the objections of many Europeans wary of Moscow.
In hosting Ms. May at the White House, Mr. Trump was holding his first meeting with a visiting foreign leader since taking office, and it will test the contours of his new “America First” foreign policy. The meeting came just a day after Mexico’s president canceled his plans to sit down with Mr. Trump amid a dispute over his proposed border wall.
Russia presumably will be a major part of the discussion between Mr. Trump and Ms. May. Mr. Trump has scheduled a telephone call [ http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2017/01/27/world/europe/ap-eu-russia-us.html ] with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia for Saturday as administration officials debate how far the American should go in easing up pressure on the Kremlin. Mr. Trump also plans to talk by phone with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who has been a leading voice in Europe for keeping pressure on Russia.
Kellyanne Conway, the president’s counselor, said that Mr. Trump was considering lifting sanctions against Russia. “All of that is under consideration,” she said on “Fox and Friends” on Friday. “And if another nation that has considerable resources wishes to join together with the United States of America to try to defeat and eradicate radical Islamic terrorism, we’re listening.”

FULL: President Trump & British Prime Minister Theresa May Press Conference

British Prime Minister Theresa May says President Donald Trump has reaffirmed both countries' "unshakeable commitment" to the NATO military alliance. Trump had rattled European allies by suggesting NATO is "obsolete" and that the United States might not come to the aid of countries that don't meet targets for their own defense spending. May's comments after their meeting Friday are meant to put that concern to rest. She says the two also agreed it is important for member countries to "invest properly to face our shared challenges together." May also says she extended an invitation to visit England on behalf of the queen and that Trump has accepted.

Russian lawmakers decriminalize some domestic violence

Russian lawmaker Olga Batalina, one of the bill's co-authors rejected suggestions that the bill would sow impunity for those who beat up their families, speaks on a phone at the State Duma (lower parliament house) in Moscow, Russia, Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. MOSCOW (AP) — Soon it will no longer be a crime in Russia to beat family members — as long as you don't cause bodily harm.

The lower house of the Russian parliament on Friday gave final approval to a bill decriminalizing some forms of domestic violence — a move that has sparked intense public debate.

The State Duma voted 380-3 Friday to eliminate criminal liability for battery on family members that doesn't cause bodily harm, making it punishable instead by a fine or a 15-day arrest. The law needs to be approved by the largely rubber-stamp upper chamber and signed by President Vladimir Putin, who has signaled his support.

The bill has raised fears that it could sow impunity for those who beat up their wives and children, but its supporters have argued that it retains criminal responsibility for repeat offenders.

The measure is a response to conservative criticism of the current law, seen by some as a threat to parents who might spank their children.

The bill stems from last year's Supreme Court ruling to decriminalize battery that doesn't inflict bodily harm, but to retain criminal charges for those accused of battery against family members. The Duma then approved the corresponding legislation only to change course now.

Andrei Isayev of the main Kremlin faction, the United Russia, said lawmakers are "heeding the public call" by correcting a mistake they made last year.

A survey this month by state-run pollster VTsIOM showed that 19 percent of Russians said "it can be acceptable" to hit one's wife, husband or child "in certain circumstances." The nationwide poll by phone of 1,800 people was held Jan. 13-15. The survey had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Critics of the measure have warned that it would encourage domestic violence and fuel crime.

"This bill would establish violence as a norm of conduct," Communist lawmaker Yuri Sinelshchikov said during the debate.

Data on domestic violence in Russia is scarce, but Interior Ministry statistics show that 40 percent of all violent crimes in Russia are committed in family surroundings. In 2013, more than 9,000 women were reported to have been killed in domestic violence.

Russian police are often reluctant to react to domestic violence calls, which many regard as meddling in family affairs.

Prosecutors in November began investigating a police officer who took a call from a woman complaining about her boyfriend's aggressive behavior. Instead of offering help, the officer reportedly told the woman that the police would only come if she got killed. Shortly afterward, the man beat the woman to death.

Trump’s Immigration Ban Blocks Travelers at Airports Around Globe

The wife of an Iraqi citizen who was detained at Kennedy Airport. She was at her sister’s home in Houston on Saturday.
JAN. 28, 2017
WASHINGTON — President Trump’s executive order on immigration quickly reverberated through the United States and across the globe on Saturday, slamming the border shut for an Iranian scientist headed to a lab in Boston, an Iraqi who had worked as an interpreter for the United States Army, and a Syrian refugee family headed to a new life in Ohio, among countless others.
Around the nation, security officers at major international gateways had new rules to follow. Humanitarian organizations scrambled to cancel long-planned programs, delivering the bad news to families who were about to travel. Refugees who were airborne on flights when the order was signed were detained at airports.
At least one case quickly prompted a legal challenge as lawyers representing two Iraqi refugees [ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/iraq/iraqi_refugees/index.html ] held at Kennedy International Airport [ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/k/kennedy_international_airport_nyc/index.html ] in New York filed a motion early Saturday seeking to have their clients released. They also filed a motion for class certification, in an effort to represent all refugees and other immigrants who they said were being unlawfully detained at ports of entry.
Mr. Trump’s order, enacted with the stroke of a pen on Friday afternoon, suspended entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, barred Syrian refugees indefinitely, and blocked entry into the United States for 90 days for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
The White House said the restrictions would protect “the United States from foreign nationals entering from countries compromised by terrorism” and ensure “a more rigorous vetting process.” But critics condemned Mr. Trump over the immediate collateral damage imposed on people who, by all accounts, had no sinister intentions in trying to come to the United States.
An official message to all American diplomatic posts around the world provided instructions about how to treat people from the countries affected: “Effective immediately, halt interviewing and cease issuance and printing” of visas to the United States.
Confusion turned to panic at airports around the world, as travelers found themselves unable to board flights bound for the United States. In Dubai and Istanbul, airport and immigration officials turned passengers away at boarding gates and, in at least one case, ejected a family from a flight they had boarded.
Seyed Soheil Saeedi Saravi, a leading young scientist in Iran, had been scheduled to travel in the coming days to Boston, where he had been awarded a fellowship to study cardiovascular medicine at Harvard, according to Thomas Michel, the professor who was to supervise the research fellowship.
But Professor Michel said the visas for the student and his wife had been indefinitely suspended.
“This outstanding young scientist has enormous potential to make contributions that will improve our understanding of heart disease, and he has already been thoroughly vetted,” Professor Michel wrote to The New York Times. “This country and this city have a long history of providing research training to the best young scientists in the world, many of whom have stayed in the U.S.A. and made tremendous contributions in biomedicine and other disciplines.”
A spokesman for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities — the association of large public colleges — said that the group was aware of an Iranian undergraduate student who had been barred from boarding a flight.
A Syrian family of six who have been living in a Turkish refugee camp since fleeing their home in 2014 had been scheduled to arrive in Cleveland on Tuesday, according to a report [ http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/president_donal_trump_acts_to.html ] in The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Instead, the family’s trip has been called off.
Danielle Drake, a community relations manager at US Together, a refugee resettlement agency, told the newspaper that Mr. Trump’s ban reminded her of when the United States turned away Jewish refugees during World War II. “All those times that people said, ‘Never again,’ well, we’re doing it again,” she said.

'Far Too Much Planning' Went Into Florida Mass Shooting Plot: Police

Sumter County Sheriff's Office

By Kelly Terez
Posted: Friday, January 27, 2017 9:35 pm | Updated: 10:00 pm, Fri Jan 27, 2017

LADY LAKE, Fla.) -- New details have emerged in the alleged mass shooting plot by two teenagers on a Florida middle school.

"Far too much planning" went into the alleged mass shooting plan for The Villages Charter Middle School in Lady Lake, Florida, said Sumter County Sheriff's Capt. James "Chris" Haworth. Two boys -- ages 13 and 14 -- came up with the alleged plan after they researched the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado, Haworth told ABC News.

Haworth described the amount of detail the students put into the alleged plot, which was planned for Friday, as "very specific" and "serious enough to the point that the other children were scared -- scared enough to come forward and say something."

The teens allegedly told fellow students to wear white on Friday if they didn't want to get shot, Haworth said. But, in subsequent interviews with the teens, that request was revealed to be a ruse, Haworth said.

"They wanted them to wear white because the blood shows better on a white shirt," Haworth said.

The teens told investigators that "they were going to drop a pencil, and that would be the initiating of the shooting," Haworth said. Witnesses also indicated that some students were warned to not attend school on Friday, according to a police press release.

After school ended on Tuesday, it was reported to a school resource officer that rumors had been circulating among students about a planned mass shooting at the school for Friday, Haworth said.

On Tuesday, the 13-year-old student was allegedly overheard saying he was going to "shoot up the school on Friday," according to a police affidavit released by the sheriff's office.

Police intercepted one of the accused teens on their way into school on Wednesday, and after preliminary interviews, "It was quickly divulged that they had been, in fact, planning a school shooting," Haworth said.

The accused 13-year-old confirmed to the school resource officer Wednesday that he and another 14-year-old student were plotting the shooting, Haworth said. During the interview with the school principal and resource officer, he said that he had made a dumb statement about the Columbine shooting the previous day, telling the 14-year-old, "Imagine if that was me shooting," according to the police affidavit. He then told students around him not to come to school on Friday.

The 13-year-old also told the school resource officer that he had been suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, saying, "I just want to die."

The 14-year-old said he discussed the details of the alleged plan with the 13-year-old because he thought it was a joke, according to the police affidavit.

Haworth said the threat was not a joke and that police are taking it seriously because of how much detail went into the alleged plot and because the students had allegedly conducted research on the Columbine shooting.

"This was real," Haworth said of the alleged plot.

After being questioned on Wednesday, the two students were taken into custody to be evaluated, Michelle Keszey, media manager at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, told ABC News. It is her understanding that the students went home following the evaluation, she said.

The two students were then arrested Thursday at their homes, Haworth said. Multiple firearms were found at the 14-year-old's house in Wildwood, Florida, including a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the nightstand in his parent's bedroom, a loaded semi-automatic gun in a family vehicle and an assortment of other guns in a safe, Haworth said.

A loaded semi-automatic rifle was also found in the 13-year-old's home in Fruitland Park, Florida. No weapons were found on either of the students or in their bags or lockers when they were apprehended at school on Wednesday, police said in a release.

In an interview, the 14-year-old said that his father owns a gun, but added that it was locked up, according to the police affidavit. The teen also said that the two never discussed what guns they were going to use in the alleged plot.

A student told police that the 13-year-old had recently attended a tribute to the Holocaust and had showed up to school with swastikas on his hands and Nazi logos on his arms, according to the police affidavit.

Both teens are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and are currently at a juvenile assessment center in Ocala, Florida, Haworth said. The Florida State Attorney’s Office will determine whether they will be tried in juvenile or adult court, Keszey said. They have not yet entered a plea.

While it is still early in the investigation, there is nothing to indicate that the teens' parents will be charged as well, Haworth said.

More than half of the school's students were not in attendance Friday, Haworth said.

Trump’s Immigration Ban Is Illegal

Protesters near the White House on Wednesday.
By DAVID J. BIER
JAN. 27, 2017
President Trump signed an executive order on Friday that purports to bar for at least 90 days almost all permanent immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries, including Syria and Iraq, and asserts the power to extend the ban indefinitely.
But the order is illegal. More than 50 years ago, Congress outlawed such discrimination against immigrants based on national origin.
That decision came after a long and shameful history in this country of barring immigrants based on where they came from. Starting in the late 19th century, laws excluded [ https://ourdocuments.gov/doc_large_image.php?flash=true&doc=47 ] all Chinese, almost [ https://history.state.gov/milestones/1899-1913/japanese-relations ] all Japanese, then [ http://library.uwb.edu/Static/USimmigration/1917_immigration_act.html ] all Asians in the so-called Asiatic Barred Zone. Finally, in 1924, Congress created [ https://history.state.gov/milestones/1921-1936/immigration-act ] a comprehensive “national-origins system,” skewing immigration quotas to benefit Western Europeans and to exclude most Eastern Europeans, almost all Asians, and Africans.
Mr. Trump appears to want to reinstate a new type of Asiatic Barred Zone by executive order, but there is just one problem: The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 banned [ http://library.uwb.edu/Static/USimmigration/1965_immigration_and_nationality_act.html ] all discrimination against immigrants on the basis of national origin, replacing the old prejudicial system and giving each country an equal shot at the quotas. In signing the new law, President Lyndon B. Johnson said that “the harsh injustice” of the national-origins quota system had been “abolished.”
Nonetheless, Mr. Trump asserts that he still has the power to discriminate, pointing to a 1952 law [ https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1182 ] that allows the president the ability to “suspend the entry” of “any class of aliens” that he finds are detrimental to the interest of the United States.
But the president ignores the fact that Congress then restricted this power in 1965, stating [ https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1152 ] plainly that no person could be “discriminated against in the issuance of an immigrant visa because of the person’s race, sex, nationality, place of birth or place of residence.” The only exceptions are those provided for by Congress (such as the preference for Cuban asylum seekers).
When Congress passed the 1965 law, it wished to protect not just immigrants, but also American citizens, who should have the right to sponsor their family members or to marry a foreign-born spouse without being subject to pointless discrimination.
