Because that other company could have an established footprint and would want to stop any sort of disruptive technology from possibly taking hold. It's a struggle to become established, but smaller companies are constantly a threat to the established. In fact, it's the entire basis of the business model of a little company called Oracle. You ever heard of them?

They don't develop. They acquire.

If a company becomes relevant, they are bought by Oracle before they become a threat. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter that the company they are aquireing isn't profitable, it matters that their technology could be. As a giant in industry it is easier to buy the competition than attempt to compete because a large corporation has the ability to push the technology, but is too large to adequately compete.
