Research and Development - Citrus

Citrus is recognized as one of the most healthful components of the human diet. Much of the contribution of citrus in human health and nutrition is attributed to secondary metabolites present in the fruit including antioxidants, (ascorbic acid, flavanones, simple phenolics, carotenoids), folate and pectin.

From 2006 through 2009 the company undertook extensive documented citrus fruit studies with Sunkist growers at the fruit juice processing facilities in Ontario and Tipton, California to recover pectin, bioflavonoids, limonoids and limonene. Scientific validation was undertaken by USDA and Chromadex Inc. These investigations included considerable research of Sunkist production of FDA pharmaceutical extracts during the 1950 -1960’s of citrus bioflavonoids, limonoids, pectin, limonene and vitamin C. Furthermore, 104 Sunkist clinical publications on citrus bioflavonoids delivered conclusive evidence of citrus bioflavonoid efficacy in blood, vascular and capillary studies.

Based on these findings, the company second phase project is to process lemon fruits during the period the tea business is dormant and to recover a number of specific botanical extracts as active ingredients for

THE TREATMENT OF INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS WITH CITRUS BIOFLAVONOIDS
1.The corticosteroid blood level is enhanced
2.Treatment of rheumatic fever is improved by inclusion of citrus bioflavonoids in the therapeutic regimen.

A total of eleven studies were reviewed on the use of citrus bioflavonoids (Hesperidin) and ascorbic acid in the treatment of upper respiratory infections. Clinical trials Saylor (1956) with ninety nine patients with allergic and vasomotor rhinitis, (which so closely resembles the common cold with it nasal symptoms) observed complete or partial relief from 69% using Hesperidin, Chalcone and Sodium in daily divided doses.

A total of one hundred and twenty one persons who met rigid qualifications as having a common cold were studied with sixty two receiving a combination of lemon-orange flavonate glycoside, and ascorbic acid; and the other fifty nine receiving aspirin, phenacetin and caffeine, a well known palliative for the cold.

A total of forty six patients (74.2%) reported on the second day of taking the medication that they achieved complete or substantial relief when taking the bioflavonoid combination. In comparison only 30% (50.9%) taking ACP’s, the best known palliative obtained similar relief.

Pipeline

Once we have the bioavailability results in hand, we plan to immediately commence a series of human clinical trials designed to test for specific conditions. First on the list are the two studies which feature our initial flagship product offerings:
•Human weight-loss study utilizing Phytofare™ Catechin Complex
•Cold and flu study utilizing Phytofare™ Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex

Green tea has been long known to be effective in promoting weight loss by inducing thermogenesis. Unfortunately, with poor bioavailability, the level of consumption needed (800mg) to generate significant results can also lead to side effects including nausea. Phytofare™ Catechin Complex entrapped in Pheroid® (Ph2™) should allow us to deliver a high dose of green tea catechins without the side effects. Initial anecdotal indications are very favourable, but a full-scale clinical trial should validate the product as a highly effective weight loss supplement.

Our Phytofare™ Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex is made from lemons and incorporates the entire chemical bioflavonoid profile. Third party studies have shown that a high-dose citrus complex is effective in treating cold and flu symptoms, so Plandai intends to test its product in a full-scale human clinical trial that should get underway this winter season. If successful, we will immediately begin full-scale production of our Phytofare™ Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex and also commence further studies testing the product’s anti-inflammatory properties for sports injuries and exercise recovery—both areas that have responded favourably in earlier citrus trials.

As you can see from this brief overview, Plandai is committed to further research as we look for ways to improve health and wellness through all-natural products. Nature has given us everything we need—we just need to unlock the secrets.
