Excellent post.

Thanks for sharing so much about yourself. Like you I am older (50) and have sheltered many of my assets. One of the things I do is to recommend that everyone with any kind of net worth, meet with an asset protection expert. Anyone who considers themselves middle class or upper middle class really should look at all of the different type of trusts. Tax avoidance and asset protection are under utilized by the people who have money but dont consider themselves rich.

Many advisors will give a free consult, why not do it? They have some neat domestic trusts like spendthrift or the self-settled trust. The self directed trust is great under certain circumstances andif you live in a state that allows for Domestic Asset Protection Trust (DAPT).

We live in a very litigious world and if someone does not sue you, you still have disease and catastrophic injury that can steal away the assets of you and your family. Many states will protect your home and retirement funds. If your self employed, you can setup a self directed retirement account that allows for a wide range of investment options, including real estate and protects your assets. I think you can contribute up to $i49,500 a year, tax free/deferred.

I am no expert but find someone who is and I think most people will be surprised about all of the options.
