Start for billions.
Saudi Arabia inaugurates the first wind turbine.
Saudi Arabia is dependent on the export of its oil. In the future, billions will be spent on the construction of green power plants. A first symbolic wind wheel now turns in the Gulf State.
The oil-rich Saudi Arabia has opened its first windmill for energy production. The turbine was developed jointly with the US industrial group General Electric, said the state oil giant Aramco. It is to supply electricity for a factory in Turaif in the north of the country. A wind turbine supplies enough energy to supply 250 households and can replace 19,000 barrels of oil, Aramco said.
Like other oil-rich gulf states, Saudi Arabia wants to reduce its dependence on the raw material. The Kingdom is the largest oil exporter in the world and now has a clear impact on comparatively low prices.
In the coming years the country wants to put a billionth in green electricity plants. Energy minister Chaled al-Falih announced on Monday. He had spoken of 30 to 50 billion dollars to be invested. Both wind power and solar systems should be built.
