Russians no longer live with the paranoia and legitimate fear of Soviet times where anyone could be an informer and disparaging comments could cost you your job or your freedom.
Putin definitely murders investigative journalists and opposition figures, or imprisons them, but these are exceptionally brave and dedicated people.
People get killed only after a long string of thuggish warnings like having your car burnt or your children kidnapped for a day.
