Very simple. Each dividend received constitutes dividend income in the year received. The cost basis in each new share purchased with reinvested dividends is simply based on the cost per share and total amount invested in each reinvestment trade. When your KMR became KMI you had a cost basis in your total KMR position, which then converted to a specified number of KMI shares, the basis in which is the cost basis of the positions in KMR which converted to KMI. If you do not still have all the statements to re-construct everything, then the brokerage holding the account for you should be able to assist.
