Disney becomes first studio to gross $7B worldwide in a single year

Disney's (NYSE:DIS) good-news day continues late, as the studio confirms that the success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has made it the first studio to push past the $7B annual global box office mark.
The Star Wars spin-off's near-$300M in worldwide receipts pushed the Mouse House past the previous yearlong record: last year's $6.89B tallied by Universal (NASDAQ:CMCSA).
It takes more than Star Wars; three films cracked the billion-dollar mark globally for Disney this year: Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War and Zootopia. The Jungle Book, trailing those three as the fourth highest-grosser of the year, was close at $967M.
“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” says Disney's studio chairman Alan Horn.
Shares closed up 1.3% today and are up another 0.3% after hours.
