You can't - at least not legally.naked short selling has been outlawed but forms of it still exist. But if you are sitting on a boastful of convertibles as a hedge fund or institutional investor and you have a strong relationship with a market maker who knows what kind of deals are made.

But think of divorce lawyers, they pretend to be adversarial but when they think you are not looking they are usually chit chatting and joking together. They also know the size of the pie the parties have and generally both sides cut a nice piece for themselves.

Market makers can short to the moon or go long to the moon, constrained only by the size of the box they are playing with. And that box is generally spread out over many stocks they are running
