I would add to the good advice submitted to you by Tommy Two Times.

If you choose to buy physical gold or silver for protection. I would highly recommend you hold onto your physical precious metals yourself. By that I mean don't leave it in bank safety deposit box or with some sort of holding bank that when the SHTF you can't get it out. Keep it in safe place, but where you have access to it yourself. Even if that means burying it out in the backyard somewhere. It may be safer there than in a bank at some point and you can go get it when you need it.
