Dog dubbed 'Houdini' rescued after eluding capture for two years

A dog who had gone without human touch for two years while surviving at a port in San Pedro is now cuddling up to his rescuers after he was finally caught in a three-day effort.

The 2 ½ year old rat terrier mix dubbed “Houdini” for his escape artist skills was captured last week by a team with the groups Hope for Paws and Rescue from the Hart, but he did not go down without a fight, that’s for sure.

Video taken of the rescue on day one shows the dog barking at the four people who came to save him and then inspecting a cage baited with food. But he just ate the treats and sprinted off.

Houdini was just too smart so we had to come back later with a better plan,” said the group in a video of the rescue effort posted on YouTube.

On day two, seven people came to the task but Houdini, who had once been captured by animal control officers six months ago and escaped them as well, sprinted away and managed to disappear from view.

On day three, when ten volunteers in a convoy of cars showed up at the port, the dog stood in the roadway and barked at them as they arrived “as if to taunt them,” the rescuers said.

But they were as dogged and determined to catch the canine as he was to not be caught. “Go, go, go” one man is heard yelling as the group gave chase armed with nets and ropes in an area they had fenced off. Houdini was finally snagged and he was not too happy.

He snarled and growled and struggled and squirmed and bit the netting as he fought with all his tiny might to free himself. He had been running so hard that his paws were bleeding.

Cut to a day later and the little guy was a totally new dog. He got a bath and lots of belly rubs and hugs and he snuggled up in the lap of one rescuer like she had had him since he was a puppy.

He’s now in a foster home where he’s waiting for someone to adopt him.

"Houdini is doing great,” said Eldad Hagar, founder of Hope for Paws to The Dodo. "He was just too scared,” he said. “He is such a happy dog, loves people, loves dogs, it's almost weird how fast he turned around."
