Gaming co Zynga trains eyes on India to target women gamers
ET Bureau | Nov 25, 2016, 12.47 PM IST

BENGALURU: San Francisco-based gaming company Zynga is creating an entire mobile game in its Indian studio that will be aimed primarily at an Indian audience, in what is a first-of-its kind initiative for the global gaming industry. The game is designed to appeal to female mobile gamers and will be launched in the New Year according to people directly aware of the development. "The game will be tested among female mobile gamers who play games similar to the Candy Crush Saga," said one person cited above.

If Zynga receives positive feedback and is sure about it's success in the Indian market then the company will aim to launch it during the first half of 2017," said the source. A representative for Zynga declined to comment on ET's email queries on the topic.

According to a report published by business intelligence firm App Annie in November, India is one of the the top five mobile gaming markets globally, right behind Russia and Brazil. Most mobile gaming companies in India have struggled with monetisation strategies, besides seeing a slow growth with the in-app purchase model, Indian mobile gamers are still reluctant to spend extensively on mobile games.

App Annie's report also indicated that social, multi-player and strategy based games appear to be generating revenues in India. During the second quarter of 2016 in India, in the list of top revenue generating games across iOS App Store and Google Play, Zynga's casino game Zynga Poker featured seventh on the list. In another recent report by digital gaming marketplace Mauj Mobile and according to several gaming companies in India, from Nazara Games to Games2win, 99Games and others, female mobile gamers have been on the rise this year.

According to Alok Kejriwal, founder of Games2win, of the 80 million game downloads they have seen since the launch of the company, 62% could be attributed to women. The company's Gully Cricket game which had teams of three boys and two girls led to an increasing demand for an all-girls cricket game. Rohit Bhat, founder of 99Games, claims that women have always been a target group for the company, their game Star Chef indicated that 85% of the mobile gamers were women. "There's a huge market for women gaming products in India that went largely unnoticed until recently, we will be launching two more women gaming products in the market the details of which are too soon to disclose," said Bhat.

Mauj Mobile's survey has attributed the frequency of women playing mobile games on a daily basis at 79%, in comparison to 71% for men, with women spending anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours on mobile games. Their research also indicated that puzzle and strategy-oriented games were more popular among women. The growing number of female mobile gamers across segments ranging from housewives to teenagers could be indicative of Zynga's interest in testing the waters in the Indian mobile gaming market.
