verifying their citizens bank account balances, employment status and any criminal record.
The History
Canada granted asylum to Mexican mayors, police and other government officials whose lives were in danger because they had not cooperated with the drug cartels.
In 2010 conservative Canadian PM Stephen Harper deported all of these refugee officials back to Mexico and imposed a visa requirement on all Mexicans.
Once back in Mexico nearly all of the former refugees who had fled to Canada were quickly executed by the drug gangs they had crossed.
You may find this hard to believe but this callous action created a lot of hatred in Mexico for PM Harper. PM Justin Trudeau has restored the policies in place prior to Stephen Harper's betrayal of trust.
