Pharmaceutical companies spend far more on advertising than research. And they advertise drugs that one cannot even buy without a prescription from a doctor. So their whining about R and D costs are mostly discretionary items in their budgets.

That would be a good place to put the skids to. That, and the kickbacks to doctors should be made illegal. I have a nephew who is a physician who tells some of the incredible tales of trips, cash, etc. for prescribing drugs that are no more effective than non-advertised ones. It is just another needless addition to health care costs.
