I actually have more than a clue about its lifespan.
#1. H265 codec is now released and decoders will soon be included in new hardware if it's not being so already.
#2. AV1 codec is scheduled for release within 4 months. Within a year after that, new hardware should include decoders for it also.
#3. All patents expire at a known time. Including the Nash patent.
BONUS EXPLAINER: MAXD already (supposedly) had a contract to license the patent and that didn't stop Nash from disrupting the google lawsuit for over a year. So what makes this press release any different than the one from years ago about the same patent?
answer: NOTHING. You are still relying on Nash cooperating.
