Newly, I'm a big proponent of NOT doing any kind of reload or re formatting a drive because of a update. Have you contacted your platform's support yet? Is this with any other program as well?
Does the platform use Java? Microsoft updates can bork a lot of 3rd party programs including Java. I've read where Microsoft uses it's own java/scripting and can turn off 3rd party mods.

You could try disconnecting from the internet, set internet connection to disable to reboot without going online, and this should stop any background programs possible calling home, including microsoft. I've read where there is activity by microsoft in the background at all times, even when it's not updating. A program like zonelab will actually pop up and announce if updating was going on.

And not able to restore could point to the newer microsoft updates.
Go into the restore screen and look for the 'show hidden updates" to see if something else since that time re-updated.

Also, doesn't win10 restore allow you to go and choose your own dates as opposed as letting win10 try?

I wish I had something else more concrete.
