I only hold a small block here so I have been reluctant to post, especially since it is outside of my forte, but the discussion on buys/sells piqued my interest so I thought I'd offer my two cents.

A stock is worth whatever you can get out of it. Bidders are offering to buy at a certain price. Sellers are asking a certain price. Since there are always at least two participants (not counting mm's) there is always a buyer and a seller.

BUT...

If the player(s) on the bid stack get hit, traders normally refer to that as a sell, because the seller(s) gave in to the lower offer.

If the player(s) on the ask stack get hit, traders normally refer to that as a buy, because the buyer(s) gave in to the higher offer.

Frequently the block contains more than one pps. A large block might take out more than one bidder, and/or more than one buyer. In this case the open, close, high, and low are all important in discerning whether it was a buy or a sell.
