Hassett has survived because its basically his and Hodowanec's company and IP. He has worked with (i.e. published in peer reviewed journals) with at least two of those on the advisory board, and my guess is many of the others respect him. From the yearly filing it sounded like the generator license he expected fell through. My guess it was in Dec 2015 when the testing had unacceptable variations.
I don't think the company will survive without Hassett, but he should consider stepping down to a chief scientist position or something similar and let a business man run the company.
I will add though that most of the employees took shares instead of dollars in the last few months when things got really rough. You have to read through the sec filings to see this.
Also, many insiders have bought shares in the past year. Quite a few in Feb. So to describe them as making money off the company via salary and consulting is not accurate. I believe they really want this company to succeed, but they are having difficulty executing it.
