As locally transmitted cases of the Zika virus continue to emerge, a South Florida company is helping to develop a product that could be used globally to battle the threat.

Opko Health, a Miami-based pharmaceutical and diagnostics company founded by billionaire Dr. Phillip Frost, is playing a strategic role in helping to bring the first Zika vaccine to market. As a major shareholder of and an active strategic investor in Portland-based VBI Vaccines, Opko is guiding the development of a vaccine candidate that VBI CEO Jeff Baxter said could be widely available by 2019.
