Suitability for tolerating treatment should be deciding factor, not age. My guess is this is a way to trim health care costs.

Women diagnosed with breast cancer after 70 twice as likely to die from it

The study by Genomic Health, a company that has a test diagnosing which breast cancer patients are likely to suffer a recurrence of disease, and which are most likely to benefit from chemotherapy, found older women were less likely to be offered tests.

The major study was carried out in the United States.

“There are a number of reasons why older women with breast cancer have poorer survival, but it’s vital that we address these to ensure that women who could benefit from treatment receive it.

"Many older women decide not to have treatment which causes side-effects, such as chemotherapy, or treatments may not be recommended because of other illnesses and conditions. As this research shows, we can now identify women who are most likely to benefit from chemotherapy based on the genetic makeup of their cancer and make treatment recommendations based on this important information.”
