Waiting out Hurricane Matthew, I was reading a book (Our Glorious Century) highlighting the 20th century- Teddy Roosevelt, the Model T, pole exploration, Prohibition, etc.
It touched on the worst drought in US history, across the Great Plains. Dust clouds would come on suddenly and build up to the point where it covered homes and buried livestock.
The book spoke of how "midwestern farmers managed to wring a bit of humor from the situation" and tell dust jokes. One went like this: "a truck driver spotted a ten gallon hat resting atop a dust drift, picked it up, and uncovered the head of cowboy. "Can I give you a lift?", the startled driver asked. "Nope, I'll make it on my own" the cowboy replied. "I'm on a horse".
