Donald Trump won and Hillary Clinton lost! That's a lie, but it suits the times

Donald Trump made a fool of himself so many times it wasn't worth counting. He told half-truths and plucked lies out of the air ["I opposed the invasion of Iraq"]. He blurted streams of incomprehensible free association. He raved, interrupted and sniffled like a coke addict.

But here's the thing, as Trump might say. It almost certainly didn't matter.

VIDEO: 2016 presidential debate: Clinton versus Trump

Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump trade blows in the first of three presidential debates.

Not to the Trump army.

He's been raving and lying and making a fool of himself ever since he stood in the marble and glitz foyer of his Manhattan tower on June 16 last year – yes, more than 15 months ago – and declared the American dream was dead but he'd make America great again by building a great, great wall against Mexico's rapists and drug dealers and criminals.

He went on, in announcing his candidature that day, to rant for what felt like hours about the damnedest of things: how Ford would beg him to bring its Mexican factory back to the US, how he liked the Chinese because he'd sold a $15 million apartment to someone from China, how he was worth more than $8 billion but wasn't bragging.

And in all the 15 months since, as he's evolved into an ever greater buffoon, he's become ever more popular.

Tens of millions of Americans think he's the cat's pyjamas. At least.

So let's not try to judge the debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton from any halfway rational position.
The debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump can't be judged from a rational position.

The debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump can't be judged from a rational position.

That would require us to announce that Clinton won the thing because she mostly made sense, understood matters of policy, maintained her cool and kept a straight face in the presence of low-camp burlesque.

We're not in that universe any more.

Call a win for Clinton and you'd be confirming to Trump's supporters what to them is the obvious: Clinton is a more polished performer who knows her debating stuff ... because she's a member of the elite!

Until recently, the definition of elite was "a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society". Just the select group from which might emerge a worthy president, you might imagine.

But that was then. Elites in the moron-Trump era are to be despised because, umm, they're superior.

As for Clinton's frequent calls during the debate for the fact checkers, who needs facts when Donald Trump is frothing?

Let's just do what Donald does and tell a bare-faced lie.

He won.

A taste of a subtle Aussie sense of humor .. :)

"we still have to get out the vote!"

You're right, bulldzr, getting out the vote is all important.

Hillary Clinton leads, but Donald Trump supporters are more certain they’ll vote

The good glam there is that the Hillary camp has been aware of that from the beginning.

It was Plato who said, “He, O men, is the wisest, who like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing”
