Currently the USFS in looking at the environmental impact study that was approved by the State of Minnesota concerning Polymet. Technically, if the the Fed wanted to enforce it's standards, all mining would have to be shut down in Minnesota until all sulfate levels were brought down. This would stop the flow of a good chunk of US steel. The Fed is going to leave this issue up to the State of Minnesota.
