Aef...I have to believe that 3D printing (both as a product to sell and for internal purposes) might still constitute a small percentage of the picture for GE's overall performance .. certainly in the short run.

I think we have evidence as to how the market may not yet fully appreciate 3D potential.... and this was with a company that was a 3D pure play.

To move the needle with GE I would think it could take longer for
1) 3D to make an significant difference to GEs bottom line and 2) for the market to appreciate the potential impact of 3D on GE for 3D to move the needle.

Plus I understand that GE has a significant position in the area of equipment production in the energy sector. This could provide a significant headwind for GE. I would not be surprised if purchases of GE energy equipment were committed to before the downturn in energy prices. Would not be surprised to start to hear more about energy sector having a negative impact on GE industrial performance. Just theorizing. Maybe it has already started.

I tend to focus on investing in lots of (potential) high growth companies hoping that a few take off. GE is closely followed by a million people who know much more than I will ever know about investing. I think that the part of the market that retail investors have an advantage over the big guys is with small because 1) the stocks are not closely watched and 2) the companies are so small that investing in them won't make any different to the portfolios of the big guy. And buying any amount stock that would make a difference in their portfolio serves to drive up the price they have to pay for the stock.

ps. I bought some shares SLM about 8 months ago. Amazed to find that Fidelity did not even have this stock listed such that I could not buy it. They had to do something (forget what) to make it available to buy through them. I was stunned. SLM has been a pretty significant player in this industry. But, great news to see something like this for a retail investor.

Just free form thinking.
