Monsanto whistleblower to collect $22M SEC award

A former Monsanto (NYSE:MON) executive who tipped the SEC to accounting improprieties involving the company's Roundup product has been awarded ~$22.4M from the agency's whistleblower program, the SEC's second largest award since the program's 2011 inception.

The award was tied to an $80M settlement between the SEC and Monsanto in February, according to the whistleblower's lawyer, following allegations that MON misstated its earnings in connection with Roundup.

The award represents more than 28% of the total penalty and nearly the 30% maximum allowed under the SEC's bounty program for payments higher than $1M.
