We have a high water table so my drainage pipes in the basement are higher up so I have no floor drains. So, I pour the filled water reservoir into a pail and, like you, water outdoor plantings with it!

Trust me, I'd love to save to electricity and daily draining routine but it's too damp to be feasible for me.
