Members of an engineering team at N.C. A&T University are working to increase the capacity and lower the cost of lithium-ion batteries through an agreement with a national company.

Dr. Sung-Jin Cho, an assistant professor in N.C. A&T’s nano-engineering department, is lead investigator in a research project sponsored by BioSolar Inc., based in Santa Clarita, Calif. The company is a developer of energy storage technology and materials.

BioSolar hopes N.C. A&T will help it develop technology to double the storage capacity, lower the cost and extend the life of lithium-ion batteries.

“We are excited to have Dr. Cho lead our new engineering and commercialization program at A&T,” said Dr. David Lee, CEO of BioSolar.

Cho has a history of similar research. In addition to his role with A&T, he is also director of the Nano Energy Laboratory in Taiwan, a position he has held since August 2014. From 2008 to 2014, Cho was a technical lead at Johnson Controls Battery Technology Center in Milwaukee. He led the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium program to design and evaluate battery material and lithium-ion cell engineering for automotive application for more than six years and before that worked on lithium-ion battery technology in South Korea.

Since 2014, BioSolar has been involved with the University of California at Santa Barbara on scientific efforts. The company’s association with UC Santa Barbara ends in October.
