According to the LA Times, "This project is part of “The 55” — our coverage of California’s congressional lawmakers. We’re using public records to show each member's minimum net worth. The rankings are calculated using financial disclosure data for the 2014 calendar year compiled by Roll Call. The financial disclosure rules allow lawmakers to report broad ranges of minimums for both assets and liabilities, starting at $1 to $1,000 and topping out at $50 million or higher, so it is impossible to offer precise figures.Roll Call’s formula since 1990 has been to take the total minimum reported value of assets minus the total minimum reported value of liabilities to calculate minimum net worth used to rank members. Members are required to file reports annually with the clerk of the House and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics."
