Republicans Now Consider Trump An ‘Extinction-Level Event’ For The GOP

You know what’s funnier than watching rats flee a sinking ship? Watching those same rats have nowhere else to go and get sucked under anyway. It’s even funnier when you remember that the ship is only sinking because of the rats. And right now, I’m having quite the good time listening to the squeaks of outrage.

According to one Iowa Republican interviewed by Politico:

“Trump is underperforming so comprehensively across states and demographics it would take video evidence of a smiling Hillary drowning a litter of puppies while terrorists surrounded her with chants of ‘Death to America!’ But in 2016, stranger things have happened.”

Another Republican, this one from Wisconsin, is just as downbeat:

“Trump has failed to demonstrate he has a plan and path to 270” electoral votes, added a Wisconsin Republican. “Considering the disadvantage a GOP candidate starts with, the work in key targeted states like Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania has to be error-free. There is no evidence that Trump has done that or that he has much of a ground game to begin with.”

Ahhhhh….music to my ears.

In fact, 70 Republican officials just sent Reince Preibus, the head of the Republican National Committee, an open letter begging him to cut Trump lose and focus on the down-ballot races before Trump delivers the Senate AND the House to the Democrats on a silver platter.

But the general mood of conservatives not blinded by Trumpism was best summed up by strategist Matt Maclowiak who went on a Twitter rampage on Thursday that included this gem of wisdom:

None of this is to say that Hillary’s got the election in the bag. Julian Assange is still happily coordinating with Russia and the Trump campaign to fabricate a scandal that could put Trump in the White House. Also, the “liberal” media loves a horse race narrative is not above creating one for the sake of ratings.

But more importantly, even if Hillary dominates Trump from now until Election Day, it’s not enough that she just win. Hillary MUST utterly crush Trump. If Trump only loses by the standard 4-5 points, it will legitimize everything he’s done so far. The racism, the lies, the hate, the violence, all of that becomes normalized because Republicans will not have paid a steep enough price for it. And the next fascist demagogue to win the Republican primary might not be so unstable. The only way to stop the next Trump is to hurt Republicans so badly, they can’t even contemplate trying this again.
