There have only been a few truly "permanent" companies. In the past, many on the list were later acquired.

I have owned GATX since the 1980s. The company even paid dividends during the Great Depression. Can you say, "durable competitive advantage"?

Ralston Purina spun off a large number of businesses. Many were acquired. I am left with Energizer Holdings ($5.35 basis) and Edgewell Personal Care ($15.90 basis). Why sell and pay capital gains taxes? Put margin to work instead.

Phillips 66 has been good to me ($33.96 basis). Gold Reserve ($3.33 basis) will probably join the list once Venezuela pays the company $1 billion and shareholders receive a special dividend.

I also reserve the right to change my mind.
