While still remaining a relatively small industry, sales of hemp products to U.S. consumers along with U.S. hemp imports continue to grow at a double-digit percentage level. Hemp Industries Association (HIA), a non-profit trade association representing U.S. hemp businesses, estimates that U.S. retail sales of hemp products totaled $573 million in 2015, up 10% from 2014 following a sustained period of double-digit percentage growth. According to HIA, personal care products (e.g., soaps and lotions) represent the largest sales category for hemp, followed by industrial applications (e.g. car parts, building materials), textiles, and food.

The fact that the commercial production of hemp has been legally prohibited in the United States has not deterred substantial interest in the feasibility of U.S.-grown industrial hemp.

There is significant interest in using natural fibers such as hemp instead of synthetic fibers for a number of industrial applications.

Overall, the 2015 field studies with industrial hemp at UK were very successful.
