When the announcement that ride sharing service operator Lyft paired up with General Motors, the car giant investing half a billion, the action rung out loudly as a sign that the future of autonomous vehicle fleets was swiftly approaching. Urban planners, technology innovators like Google, and automakers themselves are racing to complete design for autonomous vehicle fleets that can function like this: you request a ride, a vehicle picks you up, drops you off, and then moves onto the next requested ride. This utopic vision of efficiency will allow cars to always be in use, limit the amount of parking and in turn create more physical space, and reduce emissions dramatically. Many believe that the autonomous car is the crux of this vision, and that if it can work like described, then, the rest will fall into place.

"We see the future of personal mobility as connected, seamless and autonomous," said GM president Dan Ammann, in a company press release at the time of the announcement. The connected aspect of that vision is the vehicle hardware that allows for roadside assistance, stolen property protection and vehicle status alerts. Ammann is referring to GM’s On-Star service, but many analysts believe that On-Star is not innovative enough to keep up and actually improve connectivity. A company like IGEN Networks (IGEN)is equipped to handle modern day connectivity by being able to monitor a car’s location and access the vehicle’s automotive internal data.

The IGEN solution, which is currently pre-loaded at franchise dealerships, has the possibility to be installed and activated at the car manufacturer or OEM and will immediately keep track of a car’s location, access the car’s components, and send the driver or fleet operator a broad range of alerts. IGEN’s solution allows for a vehicle to be viewed transparently enabling timely maintenance and preventive measures that include battery replacement and oil changes.

IGEN’s vision coincides with the approaching future of autonomous cars: they want to put power back into the hands of the consumer – direct connectivity between the consumer and the car. IGEN’s solution is evolving with the capabilities of determining driver habits and behavior. These habits can then be aggregated and sent to an insurance company in exchange for lower premiums as a choice for the consumer.

This level of functionality puts IGEN at the forefront of a future that is not only autonomous, but aims to give control back to the customer.
