The GOP Is About To Add Three Hilarious Items To Their National ‘Priority List’
July 12, 2016

Finalizations of the GOP platform are underway, and it’s probably even more absurd than you thought.

Unfortunately, it is shaping up to be a true refections of core republican values – discriminating against LGBTQ+ people and holding onto past traditions that need to be updated.

The process is still going on, so many of the ridiculous proposals on the floor are not yet confirmed as policy goals. Even so, the items being discussed are worrisome and deserve public attention.

Here are some of the worst (and weirdest) proposals currently on the floor:

The Bible as American History [ED: Really WTF?]

Several members of the GOP believe that the Bible is a document so fundamental to the history of the United States that it should be taught in American history classes. While Christianity has certainly had an important role in the development of America, the book makes no specific references to the United States…it’s 2000 years old.

Reducing funding for Pre-K programs [ED: OK...dumbed down is important to start early, so this makes sense]

There is no doubt in the studies on Pre-K education: it helps children succeed. Children who have not had the opportunity to be in pre-k programs overwhelmingly come to school less prepared than others who had. And yet, the GOP has decided to add language to their platform which opposes early childhood education.

One member said such programming “inserts the state in the family relationship in the very early stages of a child’s life”.

Pornography is a “public health crisis” [LOOK OVER HERE!! Not to the near daily gun slaughters...thx NRA]

Apparently the GOP has already decided to declare the phenomenon of internet pornography a “public health crisis”.

According to the provision:

“The internet must not become a safe haven for predators. Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions. We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children’s safety and well-being. We applaud the social networking sites that bar sex offenders from participation. We urge energetic prosecution of child pornography which closely linked to human trafficking.”

While a commitment against human trafficking and child pornography may be commendable, declaring pornography as a ‘public health crisis’ is just a bit strange.

Clearly, the Republican platform is reflecting a regressive party with deep ideological beliefs in preserving the past. Along with these proposals come other counter-productive parties we can expect from the GOP.

While a vote came up on removing anti-gay marriage language from the platform and replacing it with support for same-sex marriage, it only got support from about 20% of those attending.

More platform debates are underway this week. On Monday, much of the focus was on social issues, but economic and trade issues should be part of the conversation throughout the week.

The Republican platform is known to be often more conservative than the electorate and much more conservative than what may reasonably pass in Congress.

Even so, it’s depressing to think that the people we’ve voted in to manage this nation are spending their time on such regressive, wrong-headed matters.
