With the technological requirements needed for buffer-free HD live streaming coming to maturity in the last 2 years, 2016 is set to be the year that social media takes its next evolutionary step into the realm of live streaming. With the foundations laid, social media giants are now jockeying to release their own iteration of the most intimate and in-the-moment form of social media to date.

There are two challenges facing the industry which have yet to be solved. First is the successful monetization of a live stream broadcast. Investors are reluctant to get on board without a proper revenue model; as we’ve seen with twitter’s (TWTR) tumbling share price even after acquiring periscope with 10+ million active users. The significance of this issue lies in the fact that the “Monetizing of mobile presents huge opportunities for those who crack the code.” - Goldman Sachs, 2015 . The second hurdle for live streaming is attracting and retaining a large user base, as is the case with any new social media platform. Once users are attracted, maintaining steady content generation is also a challenge.

Peeks (KEK) has the solution for both. Their tip-based monetization model allows users to tip broadcasters who’s live streams they enjoy with an ingeniously fluid wallet-to-wallet payment system. By granting users the creative license of a live streaming platform along with the ability to tailor content with the aim of personal monetary gain, peeks has created an unprecedented situation where users may become the masters of their own e-commerce destiny. Their monetization even goes beyond just tips from viewers. Live stream broadcasters are able to also crowd fund, sell subscriptions and products through their live broadcasts. The successful matrimony of monetized content and a live streaming platform provides investors with the traction they have been waiting for, and the possibility of personal monetary gain will ensure user attraction and content generation inherently.

Looking forward, there is great potential to be unlocked in the realm of live streaming which only a properly monetized platform will be able to tap into. Following the e-commerce boom of Generation Y, online video has become instrumental in the research and comparison of products before purchase. Peeks allows millennials to watch the review of a product and then the ability to purchase it in-app. Peeks also presents an opportunity for the evolution of news and event broadcasting. Social media put the power of news in the hands of the people, and now live streaming will let you be there in the moment as it happens; imagine if you could see the world through the eyes of a protestor in Ukraine?. Subscription based live-streaming has the potential to revolutionize the sports broadcast industry and pay per view events, removing the need for a cable box subscription and TV and putting the game right in the palm of your hand in real time. Instead of waiting for your favourite band to come to town, what if you could stream every one of their live shows?.

As a millennial, I’ve grown tired of the intrusive ad-revenue models employed by the slow-to-innovate media giants. Im happy to see that peeks’ model is not only doing away with advertisements but will also give us, the user, the potential to partake in the profits of social media while it takes its next evolutionary step into the realm of live streaming.

I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it. I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article
