When you visit...should be open soon...smile

An indoor gun range set to open in Austin next summer will likely be the largest range of its kind in the state of Texas.

The Range at Austin will be 52,000 square feet in size, according to spokesman Scott Dunaway.

Construction began this past week at the location off Interstate 35 South near East William Cannon Drive in the state capitol.

The range will offer shooters 37 total rifle-rated lanes, plus five 100-yard rifle lanes.

There is an indoor range in Frisco, The Frisco Gun Club, which was reported to be 38,000 square feet. This new one in Austin will surpass it.

“You can shoot anything up to .50-caliber at the range,” Dunaway says. There will also be firearms on hand for visitors to rent to shoot on the range. The roster of weapons available hasn’t been pinned down he says, but visitors can expect to be able to sample a number of exotic firearms. Discounts will be offered to police and military service members. The range is in part managed by a Marine Corps veteran.

Dunaway says that the range won’t just be for experienced gun owners.

“The range is going cater to beginners, recreational shooters, and seasoned shooters,” he says.

An advanced filtration system will filter out harmless particles from the air and a company called Action Target is working on range technology, including cameras that will show shooters how accurate they are without having to reel their targets back in from down the range lane.

“A tremendous amount of effort is being paid to range technology,” Dunaway says. Sound abatement and ballistic glass are now the norm for modern indoor gun ranges.

CHL training, gun safety, and tactical courses will be offered as well. Gunsmiths and armorers proficient in the workings of certain firearm brands will be on hand for gun maintenance and repair.

How will a gun range of this size do in a city as notoriously liberal as Austin? Dunaway says that there is a demand in the area for something like this range. He thinks that the gun enthusiast is an underserved demographic in Austin.

Museum, library and gun retailer counts for counties in the Houston area and other populous counties across the State of Texas.

“The area needs it,” he says. “Our response to date has been positive from everyone.”

VIP facilities at The Range at Austin will include a cigar room (though you can’t shoot and smoke), private shooting lanes, craft service, meeting rooms and preferential parking.
