Denver Comic Con 2016 Panel Roundup - Starships, Stan Lee and much more

Panel Name: Spotlight on Stan Lee
Panelists: Stan Lee and moderator Clare Kramer
Highlights: If you've read a Marvel comic book in the last 50 years you can thank Stan Lee. Now at age 93, Mr. Lee - in collaboration with artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko - helped create the iconic, founding heroes at Marvel including Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, and the X-Men. While he loves all of them his favorite is Spider-Man. Mr. Lee elaborated on Spidey’s creation. His publisher asked him to come up with a new hero, so he went home, saw a fly on the wall, and thought it would be “groovy” (Lee’s words) if a hero could crawl on walls or shoot webs. He tried a number of names including Mosquito Man and Fly Man, but nothing sounded good. Finally he stumbled on the name Spider-Man and knew it was perfect. Excited, he went back to his publisher, who promptly thought it was a terrible idea. Not only did people hate spiders, but teens were only used as sidekicks. At the time a title called Amazing Fantasies was being killed off and no one cared what went into the last issue of a dead book, so the deflated Lee put Spider-Man on the cover and it turned out to be the biggest seller they ever had (at the time). Thus, Spidey was born.

On the creation of Iron Man, Stan was drunk with power at the time because everything they published was selling well. So he decided to make a hero that he thought everyone would intrinsically hate - a rich playboy who made weapons for the Army. He was determined to make everyone love him! And he did. Lee is still witty, energetic and still not done making heroes! In about a year we should see his next creation, “The Annihilator,” show up in POW! Comics. Other panel tidbits: Lee's favorite villain is Doctor Doom. He thinks Tom Holland, the newest actor to portray the web-slinger, is the embodiment of the actual four color character. His favorite cameo was when he was in “Mall Rats.” He loves “Deadpool" and wishes he had created him.
