MISSOULA, Mont. - A visit to Montana turned into wild night of terror for a Lake Stevens family after they were carjacked at gunpoint by two suspected armed robbers, police said.
The drama unfolded at about 3:30 a.m. Friday when two armed suspects robbed Deano's Casino in Missoula at gunpoint then ran to a nearby convenience store where the Lake Stevens family was fueling up their car, police said.
The suspects then stole the car at gunpoint and took off with the family still inside the car with them. The suspects later kicked the kids and grandmother out of the car along the roadway and took off with the parents.
"It was rough to let their children out and have their children give them kisses goodbye and not know if they were going to see them again," Sheriff J.T. McDermott told KULR-8 News in Missoula.
The suspects then roared off, leading police on a high-speed chase through the streets of downtown Missoula, eventually eluding officers. At one point during the pursuit the suspects made a U-turn and opened fire at officers.
About two hours later, the parents were found unharmed on Highway 93 near mile marker 9, where the suspects had let them out.
The suspects remain on the run. They are considered armed and dangerous.
Police say all the family members were brought back together by police during an emotional reunion.
"They're reunited, they're back here, they're safe, they're in good spirits and we're doing what we can for them," McDermott said. "And they are working very well with our detectives to give us a lot of information about this crime."
